For my research project I had initially started with looking at deception and reasoning behind lying using behavioural science as a line into looking at the truth through people’s faces. Over the past week Amy has been staying in bed longer and longer; she is reluctant to get up in the morning and does not do very much for herself when getting dressed. Putting people first Framework Putting people first was put in place to outline responsibilities of care workers when working with dementia. Some of the responsibilities include; making sure the patient has taken any medication they need to take, ensuring they have had something to eat and drink throughout the day. It is very easy for somebody with dementia to become anorexic or obese because their short term memory can make them forget that they have had nothing to eat or in the opposite way that they have already had their something. This framework will help Amy because it would be their care workers responsibility to make sure they have had breakfast and write it down if she has or not for the next care worker who may be a part of her team because then they cannot just assume Amy has had something to eat or not. There are many different types of roles and responsibilities that come with being a care worker for somebody with dementia. The care worker has to promote dignity for the service user. Respect them and give them independence, their rights and privacy. Again giving them privacy could just be by closing their toilet door so nobody can see them when on the toilet. Focusing on strengths and the things they have the ability to do. For example when lied in bed if they can’t sit up to help themselves out of bed, rather than saying ‘you know you can’t do that on your own, you don’t need any help’ ask them ‘do you want some help? I’ll help you up, you swing your legs out of bed then you can get up’. By focusing on the things they can do you’ll be helping to promote their independence to do something else. Involving their friends and family is another responsibility to a care worker to help the individual interact with family member and friends. This could just be by taking the service user for a walk to the park on a nice day with one of their friends. Giving them the chance to get some fresh air and interact with friends. Acting in the best interest of the individual. This could be just by when you do take them for a walk by making sure you use a pedestrian crossing rather than just crossing the road because there are no cars coming down the road. This links into the case study with Amy for because in the case study it says ‘she is reluctant to get to get up in the morning and does not do very much for herself when getting dressed.’ As well as promoting her independence, when giving her the opportunity to interact with friends and family your giving her a reason to want to get up in the morning. The job role of a care worker is mainly working within a team and not as an individual. For example if a service user has 3 or 4 different care workers throughout the day, the care workers would communicate in a diary by saying when the service user has had their breakfast and what time they took their medication. They may also promote their independence by using a tablet box. This would work because in the diary the first care worker could say ‘Ann took her first tablet at 9 o’clock, she is next due to take her tablet 4 hours later which will be 1 o’clock, give her the tablet box and tell her she needs to take tablet 2’. By doing this you’re giving Amy as the service user independence to take the tablet herself your just supporting her by telling her when to take it. This would help to improve the service user’s health because it means all their tablets will be taken at the right time. Also having the professionals work as a team writing different things into the diary such as what time they had their breakfast and what they had will help to minimise chances for obesity. This will help Amy by trying to keep her health and fitness levels balanced. This will also help because each different professional will also know what they had and if they had something unhealthy such as fried bacon and egg on toast, the next professional may say ‘right ok you had fried foods for breakfast lets have something healthy for dinner such as a tuna pasta salad or a chicken and salad pita bread with a Muller light yoghurt. By doing this they are getting more of a balanced diet. They could also write in the amount of exercise the service user has had from going for a 20 minute walk with the dog, a half an hour game on the Nintendo Wii. There are many different approaches to dementia care and all the different approaches can have their own effect to Amy as the service user. For example in the case study it says ‘Amy has always been able to get out of bed and get dressed with minimal support’ then it says ‘over the past week Amy has been staying in bed longer and longer; she is reluctant to get up in the morning and does not do very much for herself when getting dressed.’ There are different approaches to how the care worker could work with this problem. If the care worker decides to help them get up by physically  helping them, lifting them up and swinging their legs around to get them up and then get them dressed there could be quite a few possible outcomes with strengths and weaknesses of their own. One strength of this approach could be how Amy will then be up and ready for the day ahead. However a weakness to this approach could be how Amy has not done anything within the process. Another weakness to this approach could be how Amy may now expect to get this help every morning, because she has had full help and not had to do anything independently. A different approach to how the care worker could work with this problem could be by helping her with minimal help like usual. Saying to Amy ‘come on Amy, I’ll help you sit up, you swing your legs around if you can.’ Once Amy is up by then helping her get ready rather than just getting her ready. A strength to this approach could be how Amy will of managed to get herself with minimal support just like n a regular day. A weakness to this approach could be pain Amy may feel when swinging her legs out of bed to get up.’ However another strength to this approach is how Amy has still had her independence promoted because she has still been able to do things for herself when getting ready. The essay will specifically focus on early life influences on the health of Native Americans. The author will present public health framework to critically evaluate the impact of social, economic, cultural and political factors on the population and develop strategies to address these factors. According to Currie et al., (2012), behavior related to health such as sedentary lifestyle, smoking, low educational attainment increases health degradation in later life. However, this decline in health is not only manifested by environmental and biological factors but due to historical experiences as well. Jensen et al., (2013) reports that slow growth with toxic stress during early life are biologically incorporated during the development process. Eventually, it leads to poor emotional health and significantly reduces cognitive skills in addition to a decrease of emotional and physical functions during adulthood. Sachser et al., (2013) identified that poor development of fetus results from illicit drug use, malnutrition, excessive smoking, and lack of appropriate prenatal care during pregnancy. It is reflected in adverse health issues in later life. A study by Doucet Rovers, (2010) shows that experiences in childhood such as child abuse, maltreatment, a death of near one's parental separation, are termed as traumatic experiences and are factors for Early Life Stress (ELS). Throughout the life, these serve as a template for health decline. Several types of research have shown that the low socioeconomic situations in early life also hamper the physical function and general health in later life. According to Jensen, et al., (2013), it is due to sensitive periods of growth and development in early life that the mental and physical health in adulthood and at old age is detoriated. The Australian researchers working on public health has developed the framework of socioeconomic health determinants. It is based on researched evidence and classifies the determinants as upstream, midstream and downstream factors. From left to right the framework depicts the effect of macro factors on the intermediate factors and the combined impact of th e micro factors (Figure 1). In this public health framework, the upstream determinants identify the physical, economic, social and environmental factors as key determinants of socioeconomic variability in health. The factors such as housing, income, employment, domestic and international policies constitute the upstream determinants. On the other hand, the psychosocial processes and health behaviors are outlined by the midstream factors which are known to result from the upstream factors. Finally, the downstream factor reflects the overall impact of the above two factors. It refers to the biological health model that is it shows the illnesses and diseases. These ultimately create disparities in life expectancy, mortality, and morbidity. To solve a problem permanently one has to address the root causes for long term benefits. Understanding the concept of the early life influences may help develop strategies to prevent or develop measures to resolve the issue. It will also assist in answering the myriad questionsassociated with it. Such studies allow researchers in clinical and academic medicine towards the challenge of developing "interventions to mitigate" the health effects related to traumatic life experiences. In the comparative study conducted by Dickerson Johnson, (2012) adverse childhood experiences of 7 American tribes and compared to that of the study of Shonkoff et al., (2012) on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). The results showed that the majority of the selected subjects were exposed to trauma, and the experiences were of more than four categories. Epigenetic studies by (Shalev Belsky, 2016) reveal, genes have the ability to store memories of trauma experienced by our ancestors. He also says it can impac how we react to stress and trauma. It explains further that the early traumatic experiences influence the gene structure, which becomes more prone to activating negative responses to toxic stress. The studies are considered to be scientific proof of intergenerational trauma being real. Therefore, historical trauma is the contributing factor of diabetes and depression. According to Gray et al., (2012) increased addiction, sexual abuse, suicide and mental illness and other similar vices among Native Americans might be an influence of historical trauma. Further studies by Lovallo, (2015) traced back these factors to toxic stress in early life and poor socioeconomic conditions. According to Gray Montgomery, (2012) Native Americans of any ethnic group showed highest alcohol consumption per week. Dickerson Johnson, (2012) adds that they rank high on the list of binge drinking, and illicit druguse. National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2010, further confirms these reports. These details are in line with the midstream factors. Doucet Rovers, (2010) confirmed that alcohol consumption correlates with lack of positive role models, loss of cultural identity, history of neglect, low self-esteem, self-medication due to hopelessness, and lo ss of connections with family and tribal. Capezza et al., (2012) identified that trauma is associated with the damage of endocrine and sympathetic nervous system. During stress, the body consumes oxygen and glucose, and a brain is stimulated to activate adrenal glands for a release of epinephrine. It further results in increased blood pressure, heart rate, cortical released from pituitary gland. Cortical and epinephrine are increased at the higher rate at the time of stress. These determinants fall under the category of midstream factors. Statistical reports reveal that the Native Americans have high suicide rate even three folds greater than the national average (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). It was stated in reports of Currie et al., (2012) that the Native American suicide rates were found to be 33 per 100,000, when compared to Black (7.4), Hispanic (9.9), non-Hispanic White (14.2), and Asian or Pacific Islander (8.5). Sachser et al., (2013) analysis confirms the absence of the link to the cultural past and inability to relate to the present circumstances is the contributing factor of suicides. This gives the evidence of how early life influenced the midstream and downstream determinants. How does this determinant interact with other determinants in this culture to impact health? In this section, the author will discuss the other determinants influenced by early life influences. According to Carlson Everett, (2013) in Native Americans domestic violence, sexual abuse is three-fold higher than the average. Braveman Gottlieb, (2014) reports that there is a high rate of childhood abuse and assault due to their forced removal from native American families making them vulnerable to adverse experiences. According to Capezza et al., (2012), these children are highly represented in child protective services. In his reports Braveman Gottlieb, (2014) showed that a very smaller group of individuals has high education attainment in Native American community which is 10% out of 23% of the total population. Around 26% of the total population live in poverty and have two fold more unemployment rate and low income. They are subjected to high taxation. Consequently, they were forced to live in poor housing conditions with inadequate sanitation and drinking facilities. These are the upstream determinants influenced by the early life experiences. According to Goodkind et al., (2012) parents who are the victims of historical trauma are less attached to their children due to lack of trust and intimacy. In some cases, parents adapt violent nature in dealing with their children. Currie et al., (2012) identified that breakdown of families due to the removal of children by force is the other primary factor for detachment. As parents entered this cycle of violence, they lost social connection. They are isolated from their neighbors and mainly stay on the outskirts of the city with compromised transportation system. It consequently deprives them of medical facilities and affects their general health. These upstream factors together with midstream factors have a cumulative effect on the downstream determinants. The same is clearly depicted in figure 1. What can be done to address this determinant in this culture? In this assignment, the author discusses the ways to address the selected social determinant in this culture. Hartmann et al., (2012) suggested that the mental health interventions should include both the motivational and the intervention phases. The former phase deals with the historical perspective related to present health issues and the later deals with the use of evidence-based practices and patient centered approach. Hartmann et al., (2012) believes that these activities have immense health benefits and are evident through bout of literature available. Shonkoff et al., (2012) suggests the use of tribal healing for addressing this issue. In other countries such as Australia, this approach was successful in some communities. Community healing decreased alcohol consumption and adolescent addiction of drugs. It includes the involvement of parents and relatives, which is highly preferred by indigenous people compared to strange hospital environment. The other advantage it offers is that patients do not have to travel distant and expensive hospitals. Tribal healing is cost effective and strictly maintains its traditions. People included for healing must comply with the rules and are punished if failed. It disallows substance abuse being in a community and considered sin. Therefore, it helps people recover easily. Further researches in this area are needed, as it is evident from the literature research that there is underrepresentation of Native Americans in mental health services. Doucet Rovers, (2010) found the same in his literature review on Native Americans' mental treatment conditions that six nonrandomized outcome studies, three randomized studies, seven clinical case studies, 16 studies related to intervention descriptions, and 24 intervention approaches. However, the article did not show the validity of the treatment process or any empirical treatment modalities to address mental health requirements of the Native Americans. The health disparities will continue without the required interventions and provision of evidence-based care and patient centered approaches. Conclusion The social determinants of health and development are the agents influencing the issues. These mainly fall into three categories of social connectedness, economic inequality, and sense of efficacy. Addressing these issues is advantageous in eliminating the root causes. A participatory approach is useful to assess and address the social determinants of health and development issues. It is easy to get a clear concept on the subject by being inclusive of peoples ideas, perspectives, their knowledge of history and context of the issues and analyzing the data. Based on the above discussion it can be concluded that early life influences indeed have psychological, physiological, behavioral effects in later life. A Large number of individuals from Native American population continue to experience social, economic, environmental and physical distress. The public health framework provides an opportunity to understand the causes of the current mental health issues of Native Americans. It showed the interrelatedness between the upstream and midstream and its cumulative effect on the downstream determinants. The report depicts how adverse experiences of early life and that of ancestors affect the adulthood and subsequent generations. The health disparities will continue without the required interventions and provision of evidence-based care services. Also, tribal healing, community participation, counseling sessions are the approaches needed to validate depression related to historical trauma. Dickens is trying to show how badly unmarried poor mothers were treated in the mid 1800s. The doctor states that Oliver is likely to be troublesome. This is shocking to the reader, as it is doubtful that he is to be any more troublesome than any other newborn. At the end of the first chapter, Dickens expresses that Oliver s a parish child- the orphan of a workhouse to be cuffed and buffeted through the world- despised by all, and pitied by none. This folktale has two main characters, both living with a mind of evil intentions. Tom Walker is an unhappy man; always thinking the world owes him something. This is probably why he lives really miserably, and was so open to whom we meet next, the Black fellow. The Black Fellow is a devil in disguise, hoping to find a man like Tom, just as he did. He is about control and evilness, which leads Tom into a life worse then what he started out with. While I read the story, it was obvious to me that the text gets into detail, and then stops with a sudden finish, of each explained passage. The text was also very organized so it was possible to identify the climax, and the rising and falling action. It was also easier to enjoy this way. Thoughts: As I go back into the main theme of greed and cheat, I assume the author chose them for a reason. In many ways today, you still hear about them. They’ll always be around until people learn not to care so much about themselves. I know we are told to care about our needs first, but there is a point to stop. I mean it took a thing like September 11, 2001 to finally get peoples attention to volunteer their time and money. To me that is pathedic, why should we have to wait till the point of terrorism to be united. Also, it seems like as the world becomes advanced and older, people’s needs become bigger. What happened to the good old days, when people were satisfied with the greatest invention of 1880, the telephone? Now people have more then one in their homes, plus the latest in cell phone technology. We can’t blame our brilliant scientists and inventors for making the world easier, but only ourselves for getting to this point. I am glad this story was read; probabl y it will remind the young generation like ... It can donate electrons from the ligands thus forming a coordination compound. Cobalt usually exists in two oxidation stable states usually the +2 and +3 and can also be in the form of a tetrahedral arragement and octahedral in the case of the Cobalt(II) oxidation state . Co(III) oxidation state can only form an octahedral arragement. Co(II) is one of the transition metals which can form tetrahedral complexes more easily . The energy levels of octahedral and tetrahedral of Co(II) have the least difference in energy.The magnetic moments of tetrahedral ranges from 3.89 to 4.7BM and that of octahedral complexes ranges from 4.7 to 5.2BM Co(III) oxidation state is not very favourable, this is because when it reacts with water it would quickly go back to the +2 oxidation state. When reacting with ammonia, cobalt(III) is more stable. The Co(III) can show also isomerism. Co(III) is expected to be paramagnetic but the cross over from high spin to low spin takes place at very long ligand field strengths and therefore it is more likely to be diamagnetic. Cobalt(III) complexes are described as kinetically inert and undergo ligand exchange very slowly. On the other hand cobalt(II) undergoes ligand exchange faster since it is liable.1 In this experiment ligand exchange is going to take place such that the ammonia molecule which is a stronger ligand replaces the water molecules in the cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate. In the second experiment the coordination around cobalt is changing from an octahedral to a tetrahedral complex. The different colours of these transition metals are caused by the excitation of the d electron to another d subshell. The 3d orbitals split in eg and t2g. This splitting enables the electron to excite from ground state to excited state. The size of energy gap of the excitation corresponds to the wavelength of the absorbance in the visible region of the spectra. The mixture was cooled to 0OC in an ice-bath and 20cm3 of ammonia was added, while keeping the temperature below 10OC. 18cm3 of hydrogen peroxide was added while the solution was being stirred rapidly and the temperature was kept below 20OC. When all the hydrogen peroxide was added, the mixture was heated to 60 OC until the pink colour disappeared. The mixture was cooled in ice and the precipitate was collected by filtration on a Buchner funnel. The precipitate was dissolved in a boiling mixture of 80cm3 of water and 3cm3 of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The charcoal was removed by filtration while it was still hot. 10cm3 of concentrated hydrochloric acid was added to the filtrate and the mixture was cooled in ice when crystals of hexamminecobalt(II) chloride were deposited. The crystalline product was collected on a Buchner funnel, then it was washed with acetone and dried in a vacuum dessicator. The yield was measured and the product was kept for inspection. Experiment B: Preparation of dichlorodipyridinocobalt 1.2g of cobalt(II) chloride was dissolved in 6cm3 of hot absolute ethanol. 1cm3 of hot solution of pyridine in 3cm3 of absolute alcohol was added slowly to the solution.This was carried in a fume cupboard. The solution was allowed to stand at room temperature for 15minutes and the product was collected by filtration on a Buchner funnel. The crystals were washed quickly with ice-cold absolute ethanol and the product was dried in a vacuum dessicator. The yield was recorded and the product was kept for inspection. This prevents water from being sucked into the vacuum flask. The suction of the vacuum filtration was checked so that filtration would be a success. It was made sure that the crystals would not remain on the sides of the funnel since a low result would be obtained. Prevention of excessive cooling during filtration was by suction through a flat piece of filter paper properly fitting a Buchner funnel. The solution was cooled to room temperature and sometimes even colder with the aid of an ice-water bath. Filtration was done using the Buchner funnel to increase the speed of filtration A heating mantle was used instead of a bunsen burner because ethanol is flammable. The hydrogen peroxide,ammonia, pyridine and absolute ethanol were quite dangerous and so they were performed in the fumehood. The crystals that remained in the beaker were not rinsed by distilled water since some of the product would dissolve. The solvent had to be cooled before washing the crystals since crystals could dissolve. Sources of error: Transfer errors when collecting the crystals formed by suction filtraton, since some of them would remain with the filter paper. Some of the substance was left with the glass rod during stirring which would cause loss of the product. The mixture was contaminated and so the yields were not sufficiently pure. Side reactions could have occurred beside the actual reaction which can lead to the generation of other products. Error in the apparatus especially the weighing balance. Discussion: Experiment A: Preparation of Hexamminecobalt(III) chloride When ammonium chloride is added to the cobalt(II) hexahydrate, it has a function to stabilize the ion.2 When dissolved in water the cobalt(II) chloride salt decomposes, resulting in the formation of the Co(H2O)62+ ion. Cobalt(II) can be oxidized by air oxidation to cobalt(III).5 When adding the ammonia solution the hexaammine complex is formed: [Co(H2O)6]2+ +NH3 → [Co(NH3)6]2+ + 6 H2O Ammonia is added to the solution to aid in this oxidation process. When adding ammonia the reaction would be exothermic and so the mixture is placed in a salt-bath to keep the mixture cooled. Hydrogen peroxide is used as an oxidizing agent thus oxidizing the Cobalt(II) to Cobalt(III). The decolourising charcoal is used as the catalyst of the reaction to give high yields in a relatively short time. The activated charcoal increases the speed of the reaction by helping in the formation of the bonds between NH3 and conveniently, it also catalyzes the transformation of Co2+ into Co3+ by the hydrogen peroxide. Thus it is used to increase the reaction of the ligand exchange. 2 The charcoal is made from finely divided carbon sheets which provide a large surface area. The holes on the surface of the charcoal are used to allow the reaction of the ligand exchange to take place. 2 The process for collecting the product involves the dissolving of the precipitate in the boiling water and adding concentrated hydrochloric acid to the precipitate, the hexamminecobalt(III) chloride. When heating the mixture directly on the hot plate while stirring, helps to dissolve the crystals. The filtrate should be orange, and it contains the dissolved product. 4 CoCl2Â ·6H2O + 4 NH4Cl + 20 NH3 + O2 → 4 [Co(NH3)6]Cl3 + 26 H2O 2 CoCl2Â ·6H2O + Â ½H2O2 + NH4Cl + 5 NH3 → [Co(NH3)6]Cl3 + 7 H2O 3 Acetone was used as the solvent so that impurities are removed from the crystals. When the solution was cooled, crystals of pure product were formed and the impurities remained dissolved in the solution. If the solvent was not cooled, the crystals may dissolve and result in a decrease of the percent yield. The solvent that is chosen has to have low solubility at low temperatures and high solubility at high temperatures. 4 Hexammincobalt(III) chloride is an ionic compound having three chloride ions with a charge of -1 and the cation having a charge of 3+ . Some years ago it was questioned whether the chlorine atoms in hexaamminecobalt(III) chloride were part of the complex or ionic thus they were free. Chlorine in this complex was indeed determined to be ionic. To verify this theory one can complex the cobalt iodometrically and so titrating the liberated iodine with sodium thiosulfate solution.5 The Co3+ is an electron deficient cation and so ammonia is capable of donating an electron pair to the metal ion in a coordinate covalent bond. NH3 is a strong field ligand thus there would be more splitting, ie. it is a low-spin complex. The yield of Hexamminecobalt(III) chloride was 4.787g which is a rather high yield if one is assuming that all of the cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate turned into the hexamminecobalt(III)chloride. The yield could have been better if there were no losses during the synthesis and also during the recrystallisation process. Hexamminecobalt(III) chloride absorbs light in the violet-blue-green region but reflects the orange wavelengths thus appearing orange. The ground state 5D would split into 5T2g and a 5Eg. 5 The ligand NH3 would have a weak field since it has four unpaired electrons. From the Tanabe sugano diagram one can verify that the ligand NH3 is of intermediate field strength having a Dq/B of 1.8.5 Experiment B: Preparation of Dichlorodipyridinocobalt In the second experiment the octahedral complex of cobalt(II) chloride hexaydrate is going to take a tetrahedral form.6 This complex is found to exist in two forms: a monomer with a formula of [CoCl2(py)2] consisting of a tetrahedral with cobalt 2+ as the central metal ion and the other one is an octahedral polymer [CoCl2(py)2]n.6 Polymerizes on standing CoCl2+ 2py→[CoCl2(py)2] ↔ [CoCl2(py)2]n 6 Blue violet Diagram of structure of dichlorodipyridinocobalt 6 Pyridine has an equatorial lone pair of electrons at the nitrogen atom in the benzene ring 7 and so it is able to donate the lone pairs to the metal ion cobalt(II). Pyridine and chlorine are monodentate ligands since they donate only one lone pair to the metal. When adding the hot absolute ethanol the cobalt(II) chloride would dissolve and pyridine would exchange with water ligands since it is a stronger ligand. Because a tetrahedral complex has fewer ligands and there are no ligands at the axis, the magnitude of the splitting is smaller when compared to the octahedral. Octahedral complexes would have large splitting because of higher repulsion.8 The difference between the energies of the t2g and eg orbitals in a tetrahedral complex is slightly less than half as large as the splitting in octahedral complexes. 8 From the results one can observe that the yield of the dichlorodipyridinocobalt resulted in 0g. This could be the cause of heating the alcohol and pyridine at high temperature thus evaporating some of them and so the synthesis would not occur as desired. The absolute ethanol could have melted the crystals so resulting in low yield of product. One source of error is that normal balances would not detect such low yields. Conclusion One can conclude that the aim of this experiment: To prepare two complexes of cobalt in different metal oxidation state was reached, such that relatively good yields were obtained for the hexamminecobalt(III) complex and dichlorodipyridinocobalt crystals were also obtained by in such a low yield that could not be measured.

Archetypal Themes Present in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” Essay

The origins of Shakespeare’s play â€Å"Romeo and Juliet† are relatively unknown. It’s hard to believe, but this archetypal theme of ill-fated love predates Shakespeare by more than a thousand years. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines â€Å"archetype† as: the original pattern or model of which all things of the same type are representations or copies. One of the first pieces of written work to include this common archetype of ill-fated love was Ovid’s â€Å"Pyramus and Thisbe.† Written around A.D eight, and published in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, this poem recounts the story of two forbidden lovers who come to a tragic end, a theme recurring in literature. Shakespeare and Ovid both employ similar and different archetypal symbols within their work. One common archetypal symbol in both Ovid and Shakespeare’s work is the wall, symbolizing forbidden love. Ovid gives life to the wall by describing it as â€Å"hateful,† thus personifying the wall. Another example of how Ovid makes the wall more than just a inanimate barrier between the two lovers is when the lovers speak to wall. A most memorable line was when Pyramus and Thisbe declared, â€Å"But for you we could touch, kiss,† addressing the wall as a person. In comparison, in â€Å"Romeo and Juliet† the â€Å"wall† was the Montagues and Capulets fierce hatred for one another. In â€Å"A Midsummer’s Night Dream†, Shakespeare further develops this symbol of forbidden love by casting the wall as a character played by a person. This transforms the wall into more than just an inanimate object, but as an actual living thing that is separating the two lovers. Shakespeare and Ovid employ different means of personifying the wall, but in both, the wall is represented as a symbol of forbidden love. Another powerful archetypal symbol in â€Å"Pyramus and Thisbe† is the mulberry tree. Ovid uses the mulberry tree as a symbol of death and the ill-fated love of Pyramus and Thisbe. Ovid’s poem starts out with a description of the mulberry tree, informing the reader that once upon a time the red berries of the mulberry tree were actually as white as snow. Like all of the other  tales in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, this poem is focused around change, in this particular case, the change in color of the berries of the mulberry tree. Ovid tells us that the berries were stained red by the blood of Pyramus as he committed suicide upon finding Thisbe’s blood-stained cloak. Another archetypal symbol of death, similar to the mulberry tree, is the lion used by Ovid, the harbinger of death. In fact one can view death itself as another â€Å"wall† that separates Pyramus from Thisbe, until she joins him in death. Archetypal symbols of death, such as the mulberry tree and the lion, appear in numerous works of literature, and can be identified in Shakespeare’s plays. Up until this point, I have been analyzing Ovid’s and Shakespeare’s use of archetypal symbols, but it is also important to point out some similarities and differences between both authors. â€Å"Romeo and Juliet† and â€Å"A Midsummer’s Night Dream† both incorporate elements from â€Å"Pyramus and Thisbe†. However, the parallels between†Romeo and Juliet† and â€Å"Pyramus and Thisbe† are more authentic, given that â€Å"A Midsummer’s Night Dream† is Shakespeare’s satire of â€Å"Romeo and Juliet†and â€Å"Pyramus and Thisbe.† Both â€Å"Romeo and Juliet† â€Å"Pyramus and Thisbe† have parallel plots, common symbols, and archetypal characters. On the other hand, the original â€Å"Pyramus and Thisbe† is somewhat similar to the amusing rendition that the characters of â€Å"Pyramus and Thisbe† that Bottom and his friends from â€Å"A Midsummer’s Night Dream† perform. However, there are some differences. In â€Å"A Midsummer’s Night Dream† Ovid’s work is performed crudely and absurdly, meaning that Shakespeare was well aware of these oft-repeated symbols and themes and wished to parody them. Next time I read a piece of literature, I will have my eyes open for some of the archetypal symbols the Ovid and Shakespeare use in their work. Being able to recognize archetypal themes and symbols gives the reader a profound and more meaningful understanding of the text. Both Ovid, in â€Å"Pyramus and Thisbe†, and Shakespeare, in â€Å"Romeo and Juliet† and â€Å"A Midsummer’s Night Dream,† employ common archetypal symbols as a way to enhance the story that they are telling.
